Nathan Etherington has been working in the museum sector since 2012 and has developed an extensive portfolio of work experience. My areas of interest are public education programming, administration and policy development, exhibits, special events, and volunteer management.
Early in his working career, I started developing education programming for elementary aged children to adult education. I have grown his skills to include secondary, post-secondary, and senior citizen programming. I has delivered public programming from an audience of 6 people to over 200 people and presented at the Ontario Museum Association Conference in November 2016. Receiving my B Ed. from Western University in 2012 has given me the skills to develop great public programming for your institution.
Since May 2014, I took responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the Brant Museum & Archives. Without an Executive Director to guide me, I encouraged collaboration with other community organizations and inherited the responsibilities normally held by three staff. As a requirement for insurance renewal, I developed and wrote a comprehensive Abuse Policy. The time management and organization skills refined by this challenging work environment has given me the adaptability to respond to new areas of concern within your museum.
As an educator, I have developed the skill to be a life-long learner and enjoys being challenged by new working projects. In 2015, he took a 3-day exhibit design course offered by the Ontario Museum Association and produced his first exhibit Airing our Dirty Laundry: The History of Brantford’s Soap and Washing Machine industries highlight 3 different manufacturer’s histories. My second exhibit was Maps: The Evolution of Brant County Communities that will reproduce existing maps in the collection and pair it with an education program to offer to Grade 3 classes. The next exhibit will be called Preserving our HERitage: Stories from the Womyn’s Perspective that will focus on what women noted about herstory and will be partnering with another local museum.
Special Events are another area where I am able to excel and exceed expectations. Since 2007, I have been involved with organizing and running the Rainbow Reels Queer Film Festival, Brantford Pride, Culture Days Activities, and the Paris Gem & Mineral Show increasing participation in these events. Working with Brantford Pride, I was given the role of Volunteer Coordinator which included developing resources, running an orientation and pre-screening of potential volunteers, implementing the festival, and organizing a volunteer appreciation barbecue. My volunteer and work experience in special events and volunteer coordination could increase your institution’s visibility in the community.
