“Nathan Etherington, program director at the Brant Museum and Archives, said that Dr. Emily Stowe and Sara Jeannette Duncan also should be on any long list of possibilities.

Stowe (1831-1903) was born in Oxford County and lived for a time near Mount Pleasant, before embarking on a journey that saw her study medicine in the U.S. (having been refused entrance to medical school in Canada) and later returning to become the first woman to practice medicine in this country.

Duncan (1861-1922) was born in Brantford and became a well-travelled journalist and author. She was a contemporary of Pauline Johnson (they both attended Brantford Collegiate Institute) and enjoyed an “equally impressive literary career,” Etherington said.”
