Etherington, chair of the heritage committee, and Garner, the vice-chair, urged councillors not to rush to a decision on demolition.

They said the heritage committee hasn’t been properly consulted and needs time to provide good advice to councillors.

Etherington told councillors the proposed building would change the view residents have enjoyed since the Bell Memorial was unveiled in 1917.

“A building of this size would detract from the Bell Memorial,” he said.

“It will take a major monument and make it look insignificant.”

Etherington also took aim at a heritage report provided to councillors, noting that it lacked references and citations.
