The city’s heritage committee tried to get the church designated under the Ontario Heritage Act last year but the diocese opposed designation and the committee’s bid was rejected by council.

Prior to this week’s debate, councillors heard from Nathan Etherington, heritage committee chair, urged them to pursue designation for the property.

He said that the building has a number of other features, including stained glass windows, that add to its heritage value.
