“We have an incredibly rich cultural heritage that is well-recognized right across the province,” said Nathan Etherington, chair of the Brantford Heritage Advisory committee. “Creating a heritage registry is an important step towards recognizing and protecting properties that are of cultural and historical significance.

“Right now we have properties that are protected under the Heritage Act and those that aren’t. A registry is another tool that we can use to identify properties that are important to the cultural heritage of the city.”

The registry would give the heritage committee the time needed to determine the importance of a building before a demolition permit is issued, Etherington added.

A demolition permit currently can be issued for a property and the only recourse the heritage committee has is to approach city council for time to review the application and study the property, said Etherington.
